The Amazing Acer AspireRevo: Rethinking the Business Desktop

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

I’ve been thinking about this a lot. We have netbooks that cost less than $400 and are actually more capable than many of the notebooks we gave to folks three years ago. This week Acer launched the AspireRevo, a desktop product using the Nvidia ION graphics platform, which should sell at business volumes for around $300 and is actually competitive with the desktop hardware we are likely paying far more for today.

This is starting to bug me. We have this amazing new technology that costs less to buy and operate — it typically requires about one-third the power, –  is vastly more portable, takes up far less desk space, is far quieter, and is generally vastly more attractive than what we currently give employees. And, in a market screaming for better values, we don’t have anything in this class available for business yet.

Let’s talk about the game-changing possibilities of products like the AspireRevo and similar netbooks, what they need for business, and why more of us should be asking for them.

Turning a Netbook/Nettop into a Notebook/Desktop PC

What the Acer AspireRevo showcases is the compelling combination of Intel’s Atom processor and Nvidia’s ION graphics system. Most Net-type products have very limited graphics, which reduces substantially their capability generally and drops it below minimums for day-to-day use. ION contributes to this graphics capability, and the combination of Atom and ION appears to provide that perfect storm kind of product that is small, good-looking, quiet, capable and inexpensive.

At about the size of a hardcover book, or less than 1/16 the size of many mini-tower desktops, the AspireRivo is both amazingly small and attractive. This is the desktop equivalent of the MacBook Air with one big difference — a purchase price between $300 and $400. The product has a full port out with both VGA and HDMI connectors to monitors, 6 USB ports, an eSata port and a four-in-one card reader. It’s the only one announced with this ION technology so far.

The product can be bolted to a wall or behind a monitor, making it ideal for small cubicles, health care, hotel executive centers, call centers and receptionists in particular and desirable to most anyone who doesn’t currently need a high-end PC (only about 5 percent to 7 percent of employees need a high-end PC, and that might be overstated).

So why no business lines?

Security is Lacking:  Missing TPMs, Card Readers

Part of the problem is that  there are no netbooks with Trusted Platform Modules (TPMs). Self-encrypting drives have been a bid requirement, even though they often aren’t actually turned on, for business PCs for some time now. In addition, no one has yet brought out one of these products with a biometric reader or smart card reader integrated within them, making it difficult for them to sell into many shops that have security concerns at least as great as their energy-conservation concerns. There are no business lines that have this technology yet and lines come with special services that increasingly differentiate a consumer PC from a business PC. And, finally, the class typically doesn’t come with optical drives, which are also generally built into most PC bids.

However, the security technology can be added very quickly and inexpensively. Putting netbooks in business lines is simply a product-manager decision, and given how we generally are getting applications and updates via the cloud today; do we really need an optical drive anymore?

Rethinking the Desktop

I’m convinced we are at the beginning of the third rebirth of the personal computer and that we desperately need to reduce the complexity on the desktop to get costs down, and increase reliability. I think it is time to rethink the desktop and look at products like the AspireRevo and instead of asking “why?” for businesses, ask “why not?

Acer unveils new PCs, sees its future

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

At its Source Home 2010 global conference held recently in Beijing, China, Acer gave a sneak preview of a number of its upcoming devices that will feature clear.fi, including notebooks, smartphones, touch-screen PCs, media console, eBook reader, and an as-yet-unnamed tablet PC.

The Acer clear.fi console gathers different types of content and allows users to share or play media through their home networks.

The console can be set up by connecting any DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance)-compliant device to a wireless . Icons automatically appear onscreen when connected and users can easily browse files through the media console.

One of the building blocks of clear.fi is the Revo Family, which includes the Acer Revo multimedia center, RevoView media player, and RevoCenter storage/See laptop battery.

The slim Revo all-in-one multimedia center plays back photos, videos, and music stored on its hard drive. It also comes with the RevoPad, a backlit QWERTY keyboard wireless controller that lets users navigate and control media effortlessly.

The RevoView, on the other hand, is a 1080p HD media player that can be connected directly to a TV without complex device settings. It can play content from drives, storage cards, hard disks, optical disc, or Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) mass storage media.

Rear and side ports allow easy connection to surround sound speakers while the HDMI port enables 1080p video playback to an external HD display. A handy remote control provides easy access, browsing, and playback of users’ media library.

Designed to store, protect, and share digital library, the RevoCenter comes with UPnP support and up to four hot-swappable Serial ATA hard disks. This compact home appliance can be remotely accessed so users can connect to their server anytime, anywhere and upload or download data files directly to the RevoCenter or from portable gadgets.

Acer also unveiled its new Aspire Z5710 all-in-one PC, Aspire 5745P notebook, and Stream smartphone – all offering a seamless tactile experience so that no matter the device, users will be able to find the same familiar look and feel/See acer laptop battery.

The Aspire Z5710 is a stylish space-saving desktop PC that features a 23-inch touch-screen display with Full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution, Dolby Home Theater v3 with 5.1-channels HD surround sound support, slot-in optical drive, multi-in-one card reader, HDMI port, and an optional TV tuner.

The Aspire 5745P notebook, meanwhile, comes with a 15.6-inch HD LED-backlit touch screen, Intel Core processing power, premium graphics solutions, DDR3 memory, and cinema-style sound via Dolby Home Theater v3. The 5745P also has impressive resource conservation via Energy Star certification and Acer PowerSmart Manager.

Acer’s latest communications jewel, the Acer Stream, is an Android-powered, high-end multimedia smartphone optimized for movies, music, and Web browsing.

This 11.2-mm thin smartphone is equipped with a 3.7-inch WVGA touch-screen display with AMOLED technology. It supports up to 720p video quality, Dolby Mobile quality, and connectivity to an HDTV via its HDMI-out port.

The Acer Stream comes with a five-MP camera, integrated GPS system for geotagging, internal Flash memory, microSD slot, an ultra-fast Qualcomm Snapdragon 1GHz processor (512MB RAM), and Android version 2.1 (Éclair).

During the global conference, Acer president and CEO Gianfranco Lanci demonstrated the Acer LumiRead, an Android-powered eBook reader.

The LumiRead is equipped with a six-inch, non-glare, no-backlit e-Ink display and can carry up to 1,500 titles in its onboard 2GB Flash memory and microSD card. It also comes with a barcode scanner that can read the ISBN codes of actual books so you can search supported online bookstores and libraries.

Acer has already signed agreements with US’ Barnes & Nobles, Germany’s Libri.de, and China’s Founder to provide localized contents in English, German, and Chinese. Agreements with other content providers are also being formalized.

Lanci also teased the media by unveiling a seven-inch touch-screen tablet running Android OS. The device sports a QWERTY keypad, 3G, and a customized UI sitting atop Android’s standard home screen.

In related news, Acer has signed an alliance with the Founder Group in an aggressive attempt to enhance and expand its ITC business in China.

Under a memorandum of understanding signed during the Acer Source Home 2010 conference last May, the two parties intend to work together on planning, development, and design of Founder brand products, including notebooks, netbooks, and e-readers.

Acer says it expects the partnership to catapult it from its current sixth rank in the Chinese market to third or second within two years. The Founder Group is one of China’s most innovative and influential high-tech companies/See acer laptop battery.

Which Is The Best – Toshiba or Acer Laptops?

Monday, August 30th, 2010

Acer laptops and desktop computers alike are built by the Acer Computer Company and they have been in trade since 1976. Acer has grown-up to be among the top 5 branded PC manufacturers in the world. I have had one for two years now and have had no maintenance problems with it.

I also had an Acer desktop back in the 1990′s and it lasted 4 years until the hard drive crapped out. I put back the hard drive and it ran until i put it in storage about 3 years ago. I have found them to be good equipments for the money. Nevertheless, most frequent question people ask today is, which is more desirable, Acer or Toshiba? We will find out right now.

Actually with Toshiba, as soon as you take the plug out it goes really dark and at times even hazy but with Acer it will be clear and bright even when you take the plug out. Toshiba crashes almost every time and they are way too costly for this piece of crap. Acer hardly ever crashes only when you have lots of virus or downloaded things on there.

If you plan to buy a laptop, i would suggest you forget Toshiba and go for Acer or even Sony Vaio because they are equally good too and less expensive. A cousin of mine use to have toshiba but honestly it did not last a year and it crashed out. At the moment, he has been utilizing acer laptop he acquired about 4 years ago without any setback.

I personally use to have toshiba and within 6 months it started to slow down and crashing steadily. At this moment, i have an Acer and it works absolutely well and fast too than Toshiba which my wife has. These are just a few facts why you are supposed to buy Acer laptop and not toshiba. As a matter of fact, acer is not a well known brand but it still works good just like every other laptop computer.

What sets this Acer tablet PC from other slate devices?

It functions like a photo frame, laptop, notepad and presentation tool combining the functions of everyday computing with the convenience of touch-screen technology. This basically makes it easier for users to operate a system using fingers as the multi-touch screen replaces the mouse.

Your touch experience begins with the TouchPortal where you find applications for entertainment and fun: pay music and videos or view pictures by simply dragging objects to the virtual wall. You can jot down notes with your finger using TouchMemo and use the touch optimised web browser to surf.

The built-in WiFi network connection allows wireless reception for easy access to available networks. The optional 3G connectivity and Bluetooth provide greater freedom. Acer takes on the Eee Box with the Blu-ray enabled Aspire X3200 mini desktop PC

Acer takes on the Eee Box with the Blu-ray enabled Aspire X3200 mini desktop PC
It’s a full-on mini PC war!
They took on the Eee PC with their Acer Aspire One, and now they look set to do the same with ASUS’ Eee Box, with the announcement of the Aspire X3200 desktop PC – an upgrade from the previous one, with a Blu-ray drive and 1TB of storage

Measuring about the same size as your standard internet router at home, the X3200 is less than a third the size of the average desktop PC tower. Featuring an AMD Phenom quad-core processor, NVIDIA GeForce 8200 chip and up to 4GB of DDR2 memory, it’s just the right size and power for your home computing needs.

Internal storage, on the other hand, is whopping in size – Acer will pack up to 1TB of SATA hard disk drive. That’s a heck of a lot of home movies.
Speaking of movies, Acer has also generously popped in a Blu-ray drive plus HDMI output for connecting to your TV. High-def audio with a 5.1 channel surround sound, and Dolby Home Theater technology just adds to the power of this minute beast.

The AMD LIVE! platform, whilst annoyingly capitalised, enables home-sharing of all your media, throughout multiple rooms in your pad. And yes, before you ask – you have a choice in operating systems here…between Windows Vista Home Premium and Windows Vista Home Basic. All very odd, considering they’d just claimed Vista was “almost done”.
We haven’t managed to discover the availability of the Acer Aspire X3200 desktop PC, however the price looks set to be £240.

The Acer X3200 mini desktop doesn’t skimp on features though, so don’t be fooled by its diminutive size. This model features the following to help you jump straight into the world of high definition entertainment :-

* Quad-core AMD processor
* HDMI connectivity
* Blu-ray player
* Max. 4GB RAM
* Max. 1TB storage space
* Nvideo GeForce 8200 graphics processor
