Dell Tablet PC -A Look at the Latitude XT2

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

A Dell tablet pc is something worth considering if you are interested in the emerging tablet pc phenomenon. We will be looking at one model in particular that many consumers like, the Dell Latitude XT2.

Many people still have not even heard of tablet pcs, or don’t really know what they are. Actually, tablet computers have been around for almost a decade, though they are only starting to become widespread. The basic concept of the tablet is a mobile, ultra-compact pc that can be operated without a keyboard, using a touchscreen.
Later models, however, give you the choice to operate your tablet like a notebook, with a keyboard.

The small size is the obvious advantage; tablets are extremely small, lightweight and easy to carry around. Tablets also allow you to write with a stylus, a kind of virtual pen. This is something many people like, but can be less comfortable if you have to write large portions of text. For the latter, it’s hard to beat the now practically quaint desktop, with its full size keyboard. Tablets, while not efficient for large amounts of writing, are fine for most computer and online tasks, such as reading and scrolling pages and images.

The Latitude XT2 is a higher-end (prices start at around $2,000) tablet pc made by Dell. It has an attractive steel-gray color and has a smooth, rectangular, metallic, sort of futuristic look. The Latitude XT2 comes loaded with Windows 7, and is operated by a powerful Intel processor.

The Latitude XT2 is compact and lightweight, even for a tablet. Only one inch thick, carrying it around is not very different from carrying a hardcover book. The 12 inch screen is nice and clear, especially for a tablet. The XT2 can be operated in either tablet or notebook mode. In tablet mode, you can use your fingers or a pen. This is one of the unique features of a tablet pc -you can write as you can with a pen on a page.

You can zoom in on online graphics or efficiently scroll through even large web pages on the multi-touch screen. The XT2 is a good choice if you are looking for a tablet that gives you easy navigation. And you can always switch to keyboard mode if you want to type a large block of text.

The XT2 has some drawbacks, of course. It lacks an internal optical drive or camera. Battery life is not exceptional; professional and customer reviews rate it from slightly below average to average. The price is higher than many other tablets. You are essentially paying for the exceptional quality and user-friendliness of the screen.

Is this Dell tablet pc something you should buy? It depends on your needs. This higher end model is probably best suited for someone who plans to use their tablet frequently and will appreciate the XT2′s positive features. More casual users could probably get by with a less expensive tablet, or perhaps even wait for the prices to drop some more.

Dell desktop pc freezes on boot up ?

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

My Dell E521 freezes on bootup on the first page, the status box that fills up gets half way and then just gets stuck and nothing happens? But if i turn the computer off and then on again it boots fine?

Any ideas what may be making this happen?

we were given an old Dell desktop PC running 98 . I have some questions about networking… ??

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

Ok, Hubby’s boss gave him a Dell desktop PC (tower, keybrd, HUGE monitor, etc..) it runs on Win 98 & we did get the reinstall CDs, etc… so that’s not an issue.

I have my laptop set up with my PC card to run wirelessly off the router. now this HUGE old Dell doesn’t have built in wireless, or anything, but it has USB ports (no PCMCIA slot either! or I wouldn’t be so worried)… now I am about to send my laptop out for a few weeks and I thought it would be a great time to set up the Dell. I want to go wireless and very very cheap on any type of adapter. I must go wireless though. no other option for location 1 story down from the wireless router.

so what is the fastest CHEAPEST way to go? AND I don’t know if it’s Win98 or 98SE — and some say down to SE and I guess that would mean 98 reg. does work?? I know nothing about 98 anymore… I went from 95 to ME and then XP Pro.

**** also – can I network the old dell w/my XP PRO laptop? will they be able to talk ?????

What Dell desktop pc should I buy <$300?

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

I am a cheapskate wanting to buy another desktop. Consumer Reports rates Dell about best for reliability vs price. So I am wondering what year old or so desktop I should buy on ebay?
I bought a Demension 3000 a year ago and it is fine and I could buy another but want max reliability and a DVD would be nice but not required. Any suggestions? (Telling me I am stupid to be so cheap is a waste of our time; I already know I am an idiot to be so poor. thanks.)
Anyone have a real suggestion on a dell desktop pc model? I can buy a Dimension 3000 all day long on ebay for $200. Any other ideas on a better used model number under $300?

Can anyone give me a download link for my Dell Dimension 4500S desktop PC on board video Card?

I need that video driver and the chipset for that board on that model. Any download link would be appreciated, since Dell does not have it available.

How can I fix my Dell Desktop PC that has stopped recognizing both my CD-RW and DVD/CD-RW drives?

Monday, May 24th, 2010

This computer is about 5 years old, but is in good shape. Has plenty of hard drive space, ram, etc. Have not had many other problems with it other than space in the past few years and have fixed that by reformatting. This actually happened to me when I first got the computer and cannot remember how Dell CS helped me fix it over the phone. I have tried a system restore to a few days previous, but that didnt help. The top drive which is just a CD-RW will not open and its yellow light is on. The bottom drive opens and spins discs, but to no avail. Both are currently recognized in the device manager as being working properly. I have tried updating drivers but was told no updates were available. When the computer starts I get an error message before Windows loads stating that my Secondary Hard Disk 0 and Secondary Hard Disk 1 cannot be recognized. I am assuming these are my disk drives, as my C, F, G, and H (hard drives) are all currently recognized and accessible. Please help!!!
My mistake, in the Device Manager there is no section for CD/DVD drives anymore. They are not recognized at all.
